Most asked questions...

When talking to owners of listed and conservation area properties, we typically find there are a lot of common questions. We can cover these in more detail, and in specific relation to your property during a consultation.

Which energy efficiency improvements are allowed on a listed / conservation home area?

Most types of improvements can be considered, but the approach may differ from standard homes. Options like internal wall insulation, slimline double glazing, secondary glazing, loft insulation, and some renewable technologies are often possible. However, each property requires individual assessment to ensure improvements are appropriate and comply with regulations.

What will differ in the design and specification of the improvements, to ensure they're suitable for the property?

Heritage properties typically require breathable, vapour-permeable materials that work with the building's traditional construction. Specifications may include natural insulation materials, lime-based products, and custom-made elements to preserve original features. The design process involves carefully balancing energy efficiency, heritage preservation, and long-term building health.

What additional steps are required in order to make my home more energy efficient?

Owners of listed buildings or homes in conservation areas may need to obtain planning permission and/or listed building consent for certain improvements. Building regulations approval is also typically required. With our expertise in energy efficiency and heritage conservation we can help navigate these additional requirements successfully.
